The Headlines:   

In the role of Barley Laboratory Specialist working in Burley, Idaho, you will manage the micro-malting lab and provide analytical technical expertise to meet target malt modification quality parameters and generate timely data and results enabling selection and advancement of barley lines from the barley variety development program and provides solutions resulting in sustainable, high performing barley varieties for Molson Coors.  The Laboratory Specialist operates and maintains micro-malting machines, produces optimum malt samples to enable advancement of malt barley varieties. The position provides significant hands-on support in the activities associated with treating and packaging of seed, and planting and harvesting of field trials. Considerable support for all activities associated with pre-plant through post-harvest activities is required of this position. 


This position reports to the Barley Development Supervisor.


The Responsibilities: 

  • Manages malt lab: Performs micro-malting of barley variety trials
  • Treats and packages barley seed for production of small plot variety trials and advanced variety trials.
  • Assists with planting and harvesting small plot trials in ID, CO, WY and MT
  • Serves as primary liaison for Barley R&D by working closely with Cereal Chemist, Golden Maltsters and Golden malt lab staff
  • Provides administrative support as needed for barley breeding team
  • Assists with hands-on support for field trials through planning, planting, growing and harvesting


The Other Qualifications: 

  • You have a Bachelor’s degree in Science, Ag Science, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology or related field OR equivalent experience (4+ years) in the field
  • You have at least 2 years experience in the lab
  • Ability to structure work activities for high sample throughput
  • Communicates effectively
  • Ability to learn lab-based software for instruments
  • Anticipates and plans laboratory workflow to maximize work efficiency
  • You love a challenge. You complete complex projects quickly and adeptly with your understanding of the business priorities
  • Ability to work long hours, including weekends and some holidays during peak seasons
  • Ability to travel as needed for planting, maintaining, and harvesting small plot trials
  • You build relationships and collaborate to get to the desired outcome  
  • You take accountability for results – acting with integrity and honoring commitments  
  • You have a thirst for learning – you are always looking for ways to learn and help one another grow
