The Headlines:

In the role of Barley Development Scientist (BDS) working in Burley, Idaho you will be part of the industry leading irrigated malt barley development program. You will provide scientific analytical expertise and leads applied technical projects to support the goals of the Molson Coors breeding and malting teams to provide Molson Coors with barley varieties with superior agronomics and malting/brewing performance.

 

The position provides significant hands-on support and leadership in the activities associated with the planning, planting, growing, harvesting and data evaluation of barley field trials and manages the barley analytical lab. The position leads technology innovation by supporting, developing and implementing technologies to bolster the breeding program.

 

This position reports to the Sr. Manager of the Barley Program and works closely with cross functional teams. This role is best filled by someone who is passionate about science, agriculture and beer.

 

The Responsibilities:

· Most importantly, you will lead a team of 5 talented colleagues (Farm Supervisor, Lab Specialist, and Research Assistants), and support their growth and development through career discussions and consistent one on one conversations

· Manages staff and say to day operations of micro-malting lab, processing 4,000 samples per season

· Manages barley quality lab and ensures personnel, equipment and supplies are in place to meet established timelines, processing 10,000 samples per season.

· Readily steps into the malting and barley quality labs to perform daily sample throughput activities

· Performs data validation. Manages barley quality analysis and data upload

· Develops annual sample matrix in cooperation with barley breeder to ensure proper sample flow to meet packaging requirements and post-harvest handling of barley trials

· Treats barley seed and packages seed for field trials

· Leads planting, nursery management and harvesting crews in Idaho, Montana and Colorado

· Applies chemicals to barley field trials

· Assists with all aspects of trials and seed production.

· Leads discovery for new and innovative advanced analytical methods and technologies to advance technical knowledge and expertise in support of the barley breeding program

· Identifies, develops and implements analytical methods to measure top priority target traits

 

The Other Qualifications:

· You have a bachelor’s degree in agriculture science OR equivalent experience (3+ years) in the field of Barley Development leading small technical and non- technical team.

· You have at least 3 years experience in (agriculture science or Barley development)

· You build relationships and collaborate to get to the desired outcome
